Disappearing Australia

Three times a year, the local council collects our garden prunings.

This has been so only in the past few years.

Used to be, you had to get hold of a trailer and haul your cuttings to the rubbish tip yourself.

Or, you may employ the services of the garden bag man, who provides you with a large bag like this:
Then he comes fortnightly or so and exchanges your full bag for an empty one.

With the council collections, his is now a dying tradition.

Like the milkos, who bring your milk daily. We don't see them anymore.

Or the custom of leaving a six-pack of beer with your garbage for the garboes at Christmas time.

They too have gone with the coming of the wheelie bin and automated garbage truck.

Finally, here's some shots of Flem guarding our cuttings.

  1. In our shire (Hornsby) we have kerbside collection several times a year mainly for us to dispose of bulky items we no longer need like old fridges and furniture. But enterprising hunters preceed the official collectors and most of the better items were taken very quickly!
