Hailstorm This Morning

Our neighbourhood usually gets about one hailstorm each Winter, and this year it did not happen till today, well into the second month of Spring.

To make up for this, it pelted down for about 25 minutes, much longer than the usual 3-4 minute sessions.  The stones were about 1.5 cm in diameter, larger than the usual 4-5 mm tiny ones.

The pink thingy in the picture is one of Fleming's chew toys, and the pile of wood-chip mulch is a remnant of granddaughter A's pretend campfire, which she likes to have on the lawn on her Tuesday visits here.  (No real fire allowed, as my lawn is made of plastic! No need to water, fertilise, mow or weed!)

The long vertical white streaks are, of course, the falling hailstones.  The little short streaks shooting of to a different angle are the hailstones bouncing off the ground.

I love it when it hails.

I  think that's because when I was a really young kid, my mother told me that once, "long long ago", ice fell out of the sky in Singapore.  Throughout my childhood, I was ever hoping for this to occur.

The first time I saw hail was when doing a Channel crossing from Belgium to England in the early 70s.  The Brits on board called them "icicles".

Now, whenever it hails, it's such a treat for me!
