I suddenly noticed him limping, and thought it was one of the usual thorns in his paw.
But when I touched his knee to look at his paw, he gave a loud yelp.
It was then that I noticed the 2-4 cm twig impaled in his leg. I couldn't pull it out easily and wasn't game to force it, as it would tear the flesh and possibly leave splinters in.
As the vet didn't open till 9 am, we had to go home to wait.

The vet required surgery to remove - quote was between $833 to $961.
On returning home (without Flem) I downloaded the photos I had taken and noticed this: a possible secondary penetration below the main one.

It only showed up in this angle, as in the other ones, the fur covered it.
So, I put it on my iPad and took another quick trip to the vet to show her this, and she agreed it looked like a secondary wound.
We get him back later this afternoon.
12:15 Update: Vet phoned. A pre-anaesthesia blood test has revealed he has a liver disease. Will have to get more details when we pick him up later :-(
