Current Project

Even before leaving for Melbourne, I had embarked on this project to replace my ancient speakers.

Believe it or not, I got them in 1974 - they've lasted me a good 36 years and still sound good to my failing ears.

By the way, I can still remember the very elegant lady at Atlas Sound in Shenton Way whom I bought them from. And she happens to be the mother of the school mate we all know as the "Cliff Richard of RI".

On the recommendation of Son No 1, my new speakers are these (he has a pair).

They were a bargain at less that half the advertised price because this production batch failed to install some magnets in the front panel. These magnets are used to hold up the front grill, and we got these magnets off the internet for $40 and installed them ourselves.

Some of the leftover rare earth magnets sitting on my mousemat. They're 10mm in diameter and 12mm high and each can hold 8 kg.

After constructing the boxes, here's a pic of Son no 1 sanding them down for me.

We decided on a wood veneer finish and here I am applying adhesive. Why the beanie? It was 5℃ at 10 am that day, and it's not even winter yet.

I've seen them do this on TV!

Making sure I have the overlaps before withdrawing the dowels!

Trimming - note Zhaan in the background.

Cutting out the holes for the speaker cones. Lots of cutting and sanding.

Our Li'l Supervisor!

At the current stage: oiling. The box on the right has had 3 coats, the other 2.

Son will wire up at the weekend. I've no idea how to do that.
