The Red-tailed Black Cockatoos Are Back

Back for their bi-annual visit, to eat the green berries on this tree in my front yard.  You can get a glimpse of his red tail in the lower right of the pic.
The above pic shows the female with a berry in her jaws, while three more berries hang in front of her, awaiting her attention.

These berries will eventually turn red, but the cockatoos always come for them while still green.
One in the jaw, another in the claw!
Now that all my feijoa are gone (some jam remain), our navel oranges are starting to ripen.
Looks like we'll have quite a lot of oranges this year - not too bad for a tree we don't take too much care of.

  1. Wow the oranges look good. You are so fortunate to live close to nature.

    1. Yes, it is a simple joy that is hard to come by when having to work for a living. Very grateful to be retired.
      Thanks for your comment, Luke.

  2. Love the red in the tail, wish it isn't that black mostly. I've got lots of birds in my garden...every day - pigeons, cuckoos...and little ones, mostly black or brown except one with a golden yellow breast. Can't take snaps with my not-very-nice digicam so I never bother. Oh ya! We have nice egrets too but the gawking sound they make is horrible! I blogged about one once:

    1. The tail is most beautiful when they are in flight and when they fan it out. I haven't been fast enough to photograph that, but there are some images here: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=red+tailed+black+cockatoo&num=30&newwindow=1&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=3U1UVYSAHYWZ8QWP2oDICw&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=681

  3. The saying that "a picture speaks a thousand words" is a truism for your pictures. I truly enjoy them together with the keen observations in the commentaries, which I otherwise would have easily missed.

Your front yard (and back yard) are a natural habitat for birds and other animals, as it is a orchard of flowers and fruits. Glad to see the oranges ripening this time. Naval oranges are my favourites during my visits to the Supermarket rich in Vit C and maybe Orange Jam jars this time? Ever thought of compiling your various photo shots into a booklet ? A Nature Blessings indeed.

    1. Hi sweetee
Perth is abundant with bird life. These cockatoos have a distinct cry which I have learnt to recognise; and when I hear them from my computer desk, I grab my camera and go out to have a look.

I have only ever compiled holiday shots into book albums, which I have included in the right hand column of this blog under the heading "Free Downloads". See if you like them.
